Raltegravir
Generic Name : Raltegravir
Pronunciation : ral-TEG-ra-vir
TradeName : International- Isentress.
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an antiretroviral agent, prescribed for HIV/AIDS. It blocks HIV-1 integrase, an enzyme needed for the HIV virus growth.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) : 
Hypersensitivity.
When it is to be taken : 
Adult- Oral- The recommended dose is 400 mg, twice daily.
How it should be taken : 
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food.
Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver problems or hepatitis B or C, muscle weakness, who are taking other medications, any allergy, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
* Avoid stopping of this medication due to short supply. Store sufficient quantity.
* Avoid sexual intercourse during the treatment; otherwise infection may spread.
*Patient may develop Immune Reconstitution Syndrome.
Side Effects : 
Most Common- Sleeplessness.
Gastrointestinal Disorders- Abdominal pain, stomach inflammation and nausea.
Liver- Liver inflammation.
Immune System- Hypersensitivity.
Central Nervous System- Dizziness, headache, weakness and fatigue.
Genitourinary- Kidney failure.

Other Precautions : 
* Monitor complete blood counts regularly while taking this medication.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature (25°C), and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
