Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is a human follicle-stimulating hormone, prescribed in combination with HCG hormone for infertility in women who have not responded to other therapy. It stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications) :
Contraindicated in patients with ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovary syndrome, primary ovarian failure, organic intracranial lesion e.g. pituitary tumour, uncontrolled thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, presence of any cause of infertility other than anovulation, abnormal bleeding of undetermined origin, and during pregnancy.
When it is to be taken :
IM/SC- Female infertility: The recommended dose is 150 IU/day for 5 days, increased up to 450 IU/day for up to 12 days. Follow this treatment with chorionic gonadotropin.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a solution for injection administered by a healthcare provider into a large muscle or under the skin.
Special Instruction :
*The patient should undergo a thorough gynecological checkup before treatment.
*You need to work closely with your doctor and follow all instructions carefully for the best chance that this treatment will work.
*It may result in multiple pregnancies, abnormal genital bleeding, hormone sensitive malignancies, ovarian cysts not caused by polycystic ovary syndrome.
*Exclude and treat other causes of infertility e.g. pituitary or hypothalamic lesions, adrenal or thyroid disorders and high levels of prolactin in the blood.
Side Effects :
Heart-
High blood pressure.
Central Nervous System-
Headache, emotional lability, depression.
Skin-
Rash, acne, peeling or scaling of the skin.
Gastrointestinal-
Abdominal cramps, nausea, abdominal fullness/enlargement, abdominal pain, constipation.
Genitourinary-
Excessive stimulation of ovaries leading to a condition called Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome, bleeding, infection or pain from the genitourinary tract, pain in breasts.
Metabolic-
Weight gain, dehydration.
Respiratory-
Respiratory disorder, accidental injury.
Miscellaneous-
Pain, injection site reaction, neck pain, fever, accidental injury, anaphylactic reactions, multiple pregnancies.
Other Precautions :
*It is not known whether this drug is excreted into human milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Storage Conditions :
Store it in room temperature, and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
